Crafting System Guide — Six Professions Explained

By MSCWHub Team··8 min read

Complete guide to the crafting system unique to Classic World: six professions, leveling tips, and profitable recipes.

What is Crafting?

Crafting is a system unique to MapleStory Classic World — it doesn't exist in the same form in modern MapleStory. With 348+ recipes across 6 disciplines, crafting lets you create equipment, scrolls, potions, and materials.

The Six Professions

1. Smithing (Blacksmithing)

• Creates weapons and armor

• Requires ores and refined materials

• Best for: Creating gear for yourself or selling

2. Alchemy

• Creates potions, elixirs, and chemical compounds

• Easiest profession to profit from (refining ores)

• Best for: Consumable production, ore refining

3. Carpentry

• Creates wooden items, furniture, and tools

• Best for low-cost EXP leveling

• Best for: Cheap profession leveling

4. Tailoring

• Creates clothing, capes, and accessories

• Requires processed leather and fabrics

• Best for: Fashion and wearable gear

5. Cooking

• Creates food items that provide buffs and recovery

• Some recipes give better efficiency than store-bought potions

• Best for: Self-sustain, buff food

6. Accessory Crafting

• Creates rings, earrings, and other accessories

• High-value end products

• Best for: Late-game profit

How Crafting Works

1. Learn recipes from NPCs or discover them

2. Gather required materials (from monster drops, mining, or buying)

3. Craft at the appropriate station

4. Gain crafting EXP per successful craft

5. Higher crafting level unlocks better recipes

Profitability Reality Check

Out of 348 recipes analyzed:

• Only ~16 are profit-positive using NPC values alone

• Most recipes LOSE value when ingredient costs are counted

• BUT the real player market changes everything — desirable materials sell for much more than NPC value

What to Keep (Never Sell to NPC)

Processed Leather:— Used in many recipes

Fragment of Magic:— Appears in 24 Arcforge recipes, only 10 meso NPC value

Ores:— Needed for smithing and alchemy

Crafting Catalysts:— Essential for advanced recipes

Monster ETC drops:— Many have crafting uses in Classic World

Tips for Beginners

1. Start with Carpentry for cheap EXP leveling

2. Try Alchemy for ore refining profits

3. Don't mass-craft expensive items without checking market prices

4. Materials you farm still have opportunity cost — if it sells for 1,000 mesos, using it in a recipe costs you 1,000 mesos

5. Craft primarily when you need the item yourself or there's proven player demand

6. Check the crafting efficiency calculator on mscw-guidebook.com
